Gooooood morning, deviantart. You join me at 9am, and I haven't slept since yesterday morning. (Admittedly I had a lie in yesterday, so it could be worse.) This is what's been eating this particular fortnight of my life: motion studies. We find footage of our chosen animal and match it as closely as possible with a simple rigged (not skinned) 3D mesh. The emphasis is on the motion, not the look. It was quite fun, when it wasn't being a complete d***.

My favourite's the last one. x3 Mostly because the middle one was a w****r to do, and the first one came out a bit spazzy. Ignore the mesh intersection when the cat comes down onto the beam, I know about it and it was too late. >3>

High fives to all involved, particularly =jinxhellbent who was also loitering around in the wee hours and beyond.

This is really helpful for getting the motion of the cat and structure of the movement. Thanks. :)

Aww, I'm so glad I could actually help someone! :blush: It was never intended as anything more than an exercise for myself, so I'm really glad you found it helpful! C: Sorry I've not been on this account to reply!

It was a lot of help. It is inspiration as well. Seeing others work is very inspiring anyway. :)

Thank you very much! Yeah, I like the last one best, too. >3> Cat motion references where the camera doesn't move are surprisingly difficult to find, but that last one was reffed from BBC Motion Gallery.

Cute even in blocky form! Something looks up with the first one, but perhaps it wouldn't if viewed in isolation from the video reference.

Thanks! :3 Yeah, the first one is the worst one (whyyyyyyy did I put it first). I think it would always look a bit juddery - plus, half of it's bloody made up because I couldn't see what was going on xD

We use maya at uni, but something like this isn't very program dependent. x)

I heard Maya is really good but pretty spendy.

@00:23Yeeeah,buying an actual license is not nice on the wallet. Luckily uni's here for us. :3 Blender's a good free alternative, though I've never used it. One of my friends/coursemates says it's perfectly fine for most things, and better than maya in some (like NPR).

@00:23Gotta love uni then ^^
I actually have Blender on my computer, I mess around in it form time to time but self teaching is a pain.
Do you plan on posting more of your course work?

Eeee, late response, really sorry ^^;

Yeah, self teaching can be an arse. Mostly having a play around is a good thing - there are also tutorials online like gnomon workshop stuff, digital tutors, etc.

Yup, I'll be sticking up my character design project from earlier in the year and probably my compositing and specialist (lipsynch) projects when I get them done. Some of us in our year are doing a group for building up our animation skills from the ground up, so I'll probably put stuff from that up too. x3
