The Evolution of Alex...

Description

Okay, so I’ve drawn Alex quite a bit over the years =P.
Firstly, apologies for the squished-ness of the top row – I was practically finished except for an error on the copyright notice, and then I remembered another one that I wanted in there. So they’re a bit close. Some of these are scanned from my homework diary, so ignore any lines or bits of text saying the days of the week in different languages :XD: All of these are numerically ordered oldest to newest. Many of these have never been on DA, for good reason…some are just old and bad, and I left it too long to dig them out, and my style has moved on…some are just sketches that just won’t appear. Anywho, on to the descriptions.
1) The original Alex. Drawn some time in 2004, and was also half of the first picture to include M’rev (Telkeferi’s commanding officer). He was a stereotypical commissar back then; very stern… He also had a quick random emblem on his cap. (Hat evolution: none – very inaccurate.)
2) This picture was never finished, though I changed Alex’s face in the latest version (not here). He’s standing on a cliff with M’rev, looking at a sunset-lit castle in the distance. Anatomy still very wrong, and the boots were a little silly. (Hat evolution: Got a band around the base.)
3) Alex got a bit badass-with-a-knife here. He was also a bit shorter than now. Stupid cuffs. Still didn’t know how do draw epaulettes :XD: And what’s this? Shoulders on two different levels??? :O_o: This was back when he still wore a t-shirt under his jacket, or in this case, greatcoat… Finally changed the emblem to the OnS cap-badge. (Did that in (2), but you couldn’t see it.) (Hat evolution: Got a band around the top)
4) Ahh, It’s Behind You. Alex was the worst thing about that image. Distinct lack of arm, face, body, and shoulder anatomy. Actually, distinct lack of any anatomical rules at all. At least the cuffs became briefly more respectable. I think it was around now I realised Alex should be a bit more fun. (Hat evolution: Got the little sliders for the chin-strap, though I didn’t know what they were for at the time.)
5) Alex smokes and drinks, and I couldn’t draw hats, coats, boots, epaulettes or cuffs. Not to mention faces. That’s a glow-tree he’s resting his arm on.
6) Drawn in my homework diary. Alex gets a new hat, develops shadows under his eyes and SMILES! He became a lot more cheerful from here on. Introducing the little floppy bits of hair. (Hat evolution: Finally some better anatomy for the hat…but although it doesn’t just slope up from his head anymore, it’s lost both bands and the sliders >_< )
7) It was at this point that I actually worked out what the hell his hair looked like under that darn hat. Face improved from (6), but nothing spectacular.
8) Heh, this was part of an idea for a book cover. It was a fun idea at the time, but didn’t convey anything about the story. Alex acquired a scarf and a sash that still exist but haven’t been drawn since. The CG’d OnS emblem finally saw the light of day by being badly stuck on to the front of Alex’s newly improved hat. (Hat evolution: Hallelujah! We have correct structure, plus bottom band, slides and…omg, the chin-strap! (The funny bit that goes around the front of the base of the cap, just above the brim. (Nobody ever uses it as a chin strap unless they’re in the bands or something, because it looks stupid :XD: ) And…:faint: it seems to be interacting with the top of his head!)
9) Theoretical Parade; Alex and an anthro major zoom down the aisles in a shopping trolley… Finally we have a grin :omg: Alex essentially became almost me at this point, and got a more fun-loving personality than before. You can’t see them really, but he finally got a colonel’s pips on his shoulders and collar. He’s also finally got the stripe on his trousers, plus a belt on his jacket and – thank goodness – the cuffs have gone. And he’s also got the nose that my friends and I know and love, and (though you can’t see it) the scar on his left cheek starts being a fixed shape. From here on in, we venture into drawings I still like.
10) Drawn in the homework diary. Really quite attached to this one. Alex displays his sinister/grumpy side on a train (though again, you can’t tell it’s a train :XD: )
11) Prep for (12). The exception to what I said in (9); I like it a lot less than the final one.
12) You Don’t P--- Off the New Commissar; Alex shoots someone who…well, he probably attacked him with that knife he drops when he gets shot. But I digress. Cheek’s too wide, but his uniform has practically reached the final stage – it’s got double trim for infantry and commissariat, it’s got a cloak, proper boots, proper pockets, the works. All he needs now is a bolter that doesn’t look like a huge glock 17 :XD:
13) Part of 3001 for Slartibartfast2. The evolution of the hat is complete. Plus he’s got the final rank pin designs (two bars and a star), and you can see his scar easily. (Hat evolution: The base band has been split in two for the combination of the infantry and commissariat colours, red and yellow, and we finally see the triumphant return of the top band.)
14) Drawn in the homework diary; Alex in the rain. I was having a bit of a goggles-fest, so up comes a little scene with Alex standing in the middle of a road in the corner of No and Where in his greatcoat and poor-light goggles, smoking to pass the time and getting rained on, waiting for a general who’s effed up royally. One of my favourites along with (10).
15) The most recent drawing of Alex; just a scribble in my sketchbook. Slightly inaccurate, but not sure how.

Dear me, that was nearly a page in word… Thanks for reading, those who did :hug: Sorry if I bored you ^^;

:O That's cool you posted this! I'm a sucker for seeing how someone's original character progressed in time. And WOW, he went through some changes! Seriously LOVE numbers 12 for detail, 10 for shading, and 4 because that expression kills me for some reason. XDD
